What Is Botox?
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the most recognized neuromodulator brand on the market. Made by Allergan (now AbbVie), it has decades of clinical research behind it and is approved for cosmetic use in Canada for treating forehead lines, frown lines (the "11s" between the brows), and crow's feet. Botox contains the active botulinum toxin type A along with accessory proteins — these are inert but are present in the formulation.
What Is Xeomin?
Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA), made by Merz Aesthetics, is sometimes called a "naked" neurotoxin because it contains only the pure botulinum toxin molecule — no accessory proteins. Some patients who have received Botox for many years may develop a reduced response over time, potentially due to antibody formation against the accessory proteins. Xeomin's "naked" formulation may benefit those patients. Xeomin is Health Canada approved for the same cosmetic indications as Botox — forehead lines, glabellar lines, and crow's feet.
How Do the Results Compare?
Most patients find that Botox and Xeomin produce very similar results. Both take approximately 3–7 days to begin working, with full results at 2 weeks, and both typically last 3–4 months depending on the treatment area, dose, and individual metabolism.
