What is Restylane?

Restylane is a range of dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule your body already produces that binds water and keeps skin hydrated and full. Injected as a smooth gel, it replaces volume that has been lost with age and supports the surrounding tissue.

Because it is hyaluronic acid based, Restylane is reversible. If an adjustment is ever needed, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.

What Restylane treats

Products within the Restylane range differ in texture and firmness, which is why one family of filler can treat areas as different as lips and cheekbones:

  • Lip volume, shape and definition
  • Cheek and mid-face volume loss
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Chin and jawline definition
  • Under-eye and temple hollows that make you look tired

Which product is used, and how much, is decided at your consultation based on your face rather than a fixed package.

Restylane vs. other fillers

Restylane and Juvederm are both hyaluronic acid fillers. They behave similarly, and the choice between them usually comes down to the texture best suited to the area being treated. Radiesse is different: it is a calcium hydroxylapatite filler that also stimulates collagen, lasts longer, and cannot be dissolved.

For lips, a hyaluronic acid filler such as Restylane is the appropriate choice.

What to expect at your Restylane appointment

Treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Most Restylane products contain a small amount of lidocaine for comfort. Results are visible immediately and continue to settle over one to two weeks as any swelling resolves. Mild swelling, tenderness or bruising for a few days is normal, and most clients return to their usual routine the same day.

Results typically last 6 to 18 months depending on the product, the area treated and how quickly your body metabolises filler. Lips generally need topping up sooner than structural areas.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Restylane last? Typically 6 to 18 months depending on the product and the area. Lip filler generally does not last as long as cheek or jawline filler.

Can Restylane be dissolved? Yes. As a hyaluronic acid filler it can be reversed with hyaluronidase if an adjustment is needed.

Does it hurt? Most Restylane products contain lidocaine, and topical numbing can be used for lips. Most clients find it very manageable.

Will it look overfilled? Not when dosed conservatively. The aim is balance and refreshment, not an obviously treated look.

Who performs the treatment? Krista Brunetti, BScN RN, a licensed Registered Nurse injector, with a medical director overseeing safety.
